In Memoriam: John Leo Gramig

November 27, 1940 - November 10, 2023

John Gramig, affectionately known as Jack, age 82, entered eternal rest on November 10th, 2023. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Jack met the love of his life, Raietta, and raised a loving family. A proud husband, father, and uncle, Jack found joy in playing golf and cherished moments with his family. Known for his sociable nature and witty answers to every question, Jack never met a stranger.

Jack dedicated 8 years of his life to serving our country with unwavering dedication and bravery as a proud veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Beyond his military service, Jack retired from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company after 30 years demonstrating his commitment to excellence. After retirement he went to work at Valhalla golf course on the grounds crew for several years and then onto other odd and end jobs until he decided to retire for good and live on 5 acres tending to 2 horses, a pony and the property. Jack continued to exhibit the same principles of integrity and discipline in his civilian life, leaving an indelible mark on his community and all who knew him.

Survived by his wife of 63 years, Raietta, and their five children, Kevin (Dawn), Keith (Mary), Kerry (Dianne), Kelli (Lynn), and Kristi (Kahlil), Jack's legacy extends to his 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, great friends and his cherished pet Yorkie, Holli. Preceding him in death were his parents, William Gramig Sr and Leila Gramig, his brothers, William Jr (Bill), Norman Jerome (Jerry), sister Doris Jean and his twin sister Jean Marie (Jill).

Visitation will be held at Louisville Memorial Gardens East on Wednesday November 15 from 1-8pm. A funeral service will be held at the same location on Thursday November 16 at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bluegrass Honor Flight, The American Lung Association and/or St. Xavier High School.

We know Jack was greeted into eternal peace and may his memory inspire each of us to live by the values of faith, family, and country he held dear.

Condolences and memories can be shared at Louisville Memorial Gardens East website.
