Audrey Jayne Black Greenawald (nee Schrimser), 94, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away on July 7, 2023, in Spring Hill, TN. She was born on August 7, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to parents Elizabeth and Fred W. Schrimser. Audrey was a Registered Nurse who dedicated her life to helping others with kindness and an open heart. She also found great joy in caring for animals and was known for her compassion towards them. Audrey was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She leaves behind 4 children, 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two more on the way.
Audrey is survived by her loving children: son Fred MacKrell (wife Jan MacKrell), daughter Susan Hudson (husband Bill Hudson), daughter Laurie Stewart (husband David Stewart), and daughter Amy MacKrell (husband Vassilios Valaes). She was preceded in death by her previous beloved husband Lee Black who passed away in 1986 and her husband of 23 years, Joseph Greenawald, who passed away in 2021.
Audrey received her Registered Nursing degree at Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh and went on to have a successful career. She worked at Saint Joseph's Hospital ICU in Louisville, KY, Kentucky Military Institute (KMI) Summer Camp in Lyndon, KY, and the Veterinarian Office of Dr. Catlett in St. Matthews. Audrey was also a Head Nurse at Northfield Nursing Home and moved from there to work as a Rehabilitation Nurse, assisting injured employees in navigating workers’ compensation claims and medical care at Travelers Insurance and eventually retired after many years at Comprehensive Rehabilitation Associates.
Audrey was a member of Middletown Christian Church in Middletown, KY and in her free time enjoyed various hobbies including spending time with her grandchildren, being a dog lover, ceramics with her friends, volunteering at the Animal Care Center and serving as a Docent Volunteer at the Louisville Zoo, singing in the church choir, spending time with the Harmony Group at Middletown Christian, playing bridge with her friends, playing the piano, traveling, and reading.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of The Reserve at Spring Hill, Tennessee for their exceptional care, with a special mention to Connie Macy, RN for her motivation, encouragement, and generous love shown towards Audrey during her final months.
A funeral visitation at 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and service at 1:00 pm to celebrate Audrey's life will be held on July 14, 2023, at Louisville Memorial Gardens East in Louisville, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to the Animal Care Society in Louisville, KY, in Audrey's memory.
